FUHSD Board Environmental Policies

Student leaders from the Fremont Union High School District Climate Collective have been instrumental in advancing environmental education across the district. They successfully advocated for the adoption of Board Policy 6142.5 and helped pass a climate action resolution. These policies strengthened environmental education and sustainability practices in FUHSD in partnership with Associate Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Trudy Gross and Science Curriculum Lead Kavita Gupta.

Suhani Nirwal (11) and Chloe Dahl (11) worked together to introduce a new board policy, 6142.5, within the FUHSD district which would establish widespread implementation of Environmental Education and address the eco-anxiety the current generation of students face by striving for an equity-based eco anxiety mitigating approach to climate literacy. In addition, the district’s Local Control and Accountability Plan, or LCAP, was updated to include an annual Environmental Playground and annual survey to monitor progress.

Aahaan Jain (9) implemented the climate action resolution, which sets out a framework for the Fremont Union High School District Board of Trustees to tackle climate change, both in the short-term and in the long-term. The resolution highlights current state laws, namely Assembly Bill 285 (environmental education) and Senate Bill 1383 (composting). The actions that the district commits to take are in line with these existing policies, ranging from establishing a composting system, conducting a climate audit, creating climate curriculum, and committing to electrification. He received over 120 signatures on the resolution's support letter, secured 15 nonprofits in support, and brought in over a dozen district constituents to give public comment in support of this policy.

In addition, student leaders have called on the district to address rising eco-anxiety among youth, provide professional learning that equips teachers to integrate environmental education, and administer annual surveys to assess progress and impact. Their advocacy reflects a clear student voice: district survey data consistently show that students want deeper learning opportunities about their changing planet.
